What is HSCT and why do patients choose HSCT Hospital India for it?

Travel to India
You and your attendant travel to New Delhi. Airport pick-up is included in the package.
Arrival evaluation
On arrival, you undergo a detailed medical evaluation. A multidisciplinary team of specialists reviews your results and confirms suitability for HSCT.
Admission & treatment
You are admitted as an in-patient for up to 30 days in a Triple HEPA-filtered room, where you receive conditioning chemotherapy (Cyclophosphamide and ATG) and the stem cell transplant, with 24/7 monitoring.
Discharge
Before you leave, you receive a Discharge Summary and an Aftercare Manual — to share with your GP or neurologist and to guide your recovery at home.
Recovery & follow-up
You recover at home following the Aftercare Manual, with regular blood count checks and periodic updates shared with the hospital so your progress can be monitored.
What conditions do you treat?
Multiple Sclerosis — all forms, including RRMS, SPMS, PPMS and PRMS — as well as CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy), SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and Myasthenia Gravis.
Do I need to have already tried and failed other treatments (DMDs)?
No. You do not need to have already tried and failed Disease-Modifying Drugs or other immune-suppressing treatments to be considered.
Do you accept progressive MS patients?
A: Yes, progressive forms of MS are accepted. In fact many PPMS patients have also found good outcome after HSCT in India. The results vary from patient to patient
Do you accept patients with a high EDSS score?

After arrival, the patients undergo a full medical evaluation, and a multidisciplinary team of specialists reviews the results to confirm final suitability for HSCT treatment.
Do you perform myeloablative or non-myeloablative HSCT?
Non-myeloablative HSCT, using Cyclophosphamide and ATG as the conditioning regimen. This ablates 95–98% of the immune system and is 100% Lympho-ablative.
Is this an experimental treatment or a clinical trial?
A: No, it is not a trial. The HSCT protocol is now backed by 10 years outcomes based on published data (not experimental), uses a non-myeloablative approach with reduced treatment-related mortality, and is a one-time process — there is no need for ongoing chemotherapy infusions once you’re back in your home country.

How much does treatment cost, and what does it include?
The package is US $30,000, all-inclusive. It covers pre-testing, MRI and the full HSCT treatment, up to 30 days hospital stay, doctors’ fees, tests and consultations, medicines and consumables, neuro-physiotherapy, food and laundry for both patient and attendant, and airport pick-up and drop-back.
Are there any hidden or extra charges?
No. There is no additional outside stay or hidden extra charges. Additional charges may apply only in the rare case that your hospital stay exceeds 30 days.
Is it mandatory to bring an attendant? What if I don’t have anyone to come with me?
Yes, an attendant is mandatory. They must be fully capable of physically assisting you — for example, transferring you on and off transport and to and from the toilet at airports. If you genuinely have no one able to accompany you, we can arrange a full-time private nurse to act as your attendant, at an extra cost of US $1,500 for the 30-day hospital stay.
What does the attendant actually do while I’m in hospital?
Most of the physical care is handled by the hospital staff. The attendant’s role is primarily to support you psychologically — being present, and someone to talk to if you feel lonely, anxious or homesick.
Do I need to bring my medical files and MRIs? I live in a country with a socialised healthcare system, so this is difficult.
No. Simply complete the Application Form and submit it to us. All tests, consultations and evaluations with specialists are done at the hospital after you arrive in India.
Do you recommend flying business class back home?
No, it is not mandatory. However, you must use a mouth mask and hand sanitiser on the flight and in public places for the first month after treatment.
Is it in-patient or out-patient treatment?
In-patient. You and your attendant/caregiver are admitted together to rooms with Triple HEPA air filtration for utmost safety.
I’m a bit scared of being too sick during HSCT — will I be looked after?
A: Yes. You’ll be taken care of 24/7 in a high-attention zone at a super-specialty hospital. Pain is managed with treatment, and if you experience nausea you’ll be given anti-nausea treatment. During chemotherapy you’ll also receive Methylprednisolone (2 mg/kg body weight), which helps ease side effects. You’ll be closely monitored and cared for by HSCT specialists, hospital doctors and nursing staff throughout.
Can I use my own clothes in hospital, or do I wear a hospital gown? What about my attendant?
The patient wears hospital gowns while admitted. The attendant wears hospital uniforms.
When can I go back to work?
Once your platelet count is above 100,000 — timing also depends on your stamina and the physical demands of your job. It’s best to ease back in gradually, starting with half-days or half-weeks.
When can I return to normal activities?
A: Generally after 2–4 months, based on your total blood counts. Full recovery from the transplant typically takes 3–12 months.
How often will my blood counts be checked?
A: Twice a month for the first two months, then once a month until your counts return to normal. You’ll receive a Discharge Summary to share with your GP or neurologist.
Do I need to keep the hospital updated afterward?
Yes — updates on your progression are required so the hospital can monitor outcomes and report to national and international HSCT databases.
Can I live alone after returning from India?
Yes, provided you have medical assistance nearby.
Will I still be fertile after treatment?
Around one in three patients become infertile after high-dose Cyclophosphamide. Young female patients are advised to consider preserving fertility by having eggs retrieved and frozen before treatment. When is it safe to get pregnant after treatment?
After 1 year. – Please take care of your diet – Eat clean and avoid alcohol & smoking
What can I eat on the flight home?
A: Stick to cooked foods and avoid raw vegetables, raw eggs, raw meat, raw fish, raw seafood and salads, per the Aftercare Manual. Canned items, thick-skinned fruit and packaged juices are fine to bring on the flight.
Do I have to stop smoking before the transplant?
Yes — smoking must be stopped completely before the transplant to avoid complications.
Can I still drink alcohol?
Avoid alcohol entirely for the first 3 months after the transplant. After that, only in moderation.
Is it safe to be around my children?
Avoid close contact with children who have recently received the oral polio vaccine or who have a cough or cold.
I have pets — is it safe to keep them at home?
Make sure pets are well immunised. Avoid intimate contact for 3 months, and avoid contact with feces for 6 months.
Can I travel abroad with my family right after treatment?
Travel should be restricted for the first 3 months post-transplant, and avoid destinations where medical facilities are remote.
Can I take up gardening again?
Wait at least 3 months, until your blood counts have recovered, before returning to gardening.
Will I lose my hair?
You’ll lose about a third of your hair, with regrowth starting roughly 3 months after HSCT. Many patients choose to cut their hair short beforehand, since the head is shaved once hair starts to fall out.
When can I have dental surgery?
Wait for 6 months after the transplant before having dental surgery.
