Who Jukka Is
Jukka Raikaslehto is from Finland. He has primary progressive multiple sclerosis, and he travelled to New Delhi for autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation, usually shortened to HSCT. Life Before HSCT
Primary progressive multiple sclerosis is the form in which disability builds gradually from the start, rather than through the distinct attacks and recoveries of relapsing remitting MS. Progression is not uniform, and some people with primary progressive disease also have relapses or new activity on their scans. That activity is exactly what an HSCT assessment looks for.
It is also the diagnosis at which the conversation about HSCT usually stops. The NHS Wales commissioning policy CP247 funds the treatment only for previously treated relapsing multiple sclerosis, and its exclusion criteria say, in those words, that "HSCT is not suitable for patients with primary or secondary progressive disease". Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, the United Kingdom centre most patients are referred to, states on its own patient information pages that "at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust we are only treating people with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis".
Jukka was also told something about India. In his own words, he had heard that India "isn’t the best place to be".

What Was Done
Autologous HSCT uses a patient’s own blood forming stem cells. The misdirected immune system is cleared, and a new one is rebuilt from cells collected beforehand. Autologous HSCT at HSCT Hospital India runs in four stages, mobilisation, harvest by leukapheresis, conditioning and reinfusion, across a 30 day stay in New Delhi. This is what those stages involve.
